No tail!

Lady Sandstorm lost her tail today!  Poor thing, she looks terrible without it.  Fortunately she has a lot of pinfeathers coming in so soon she will look a lot better.
I'll take some pictures soon.  You have to see her!

Happy beeps

The gang is one cute (and funny!) gang!  Chipmunk likes to fly up on me for no apparent reason other than pooping, Yellow jumps in the air a lot and Help is a very chicken chicken!  Your typical bunch of pullets.  They get scared by everything, including small birds.  They are extra scared of Lord Firestar who sometimes chases them and Lady Sandstorm who chases them quite a lot.  As I have said in previous posts, this is one family with some very tense relationships.
  Not good!

At least they like their house!

Argh! Quit it, Eggie!

Egglantine is cold.  she cries because she's cold.  I hold her and she stops for a moment.  Then she starts up again and Lady Sandstorm gets frantic!  I put her in the cage and she keeps screaming!  Argh!  Looks like we need that heat lamp.
Nasty little spoiled whiney brat.  SHUT YOUR BEAK!  In the future, I think I'll stick with brooders.  Broodies are annoying and they're hard to work around.
Meanwhile, the gang is happily playing outside.  They run about with bits of food and chase each other.  No whining out there!

Last night, the girls all got moved!

Lady Sandstorm went into the girls' cage with Egglantine.  I was amazed when Eggie made it onto the higher perch which is 14" off the ground!  Talented Eggie!

The girls slept in the Eglu!  I think they liked it.  Every time the hear something scary, they go hide in the Eglu.  Very cute.

Foot baths

Lord Firestar has dirty feet.  I don't know how he does it but they are caked in poop!  The answer: foot baths and cage cleaning.  I filled an empty sour cream container with warm water and stuck his feet into said container.  Three changes later, his feet were looking better until "cock-a-doodle-doo!" when I had to put him back in his cage.  Next time (after I publish this) I will add a little soap.  THEN I will clean that cage!  How does he mess it up so quickly?
I love him anyway, he is the nicest rooster I've ever met.

Sick of Egglantine?!

Lady Sandstorm wants to get on with her life!  Everything she does seems angry and annoyed.  She growls as she dust bathes and aaarghs when she accidentally leaves Eggie behind.  Not the happy family of the year!
Lord Firestar misses his wife.  He wants to sing and dance, she wants to cluck.  They aren't good friends at the moment.

"The Gang" wants to move outside.  Unfortunately, the unhappy family is keeping them from following their dream!  Every attempt to move the royal mommy and baby into the house has been a failure.
  Poor family.

How I got chickens

It just occured to me that most of you don't really know how I first got crazy about chickens!  This post will enlighten you.

Way back in April, 2007, some friends bought fifty meat chicks to raise for a banquet.  The chicks were very cute!  They grew up to become big, fat chickens.  Then butchering day came and all were killed and gutted...except for six pullets who were spared.
The friends went on a trip which left my mom and little sister to take care of them (I was absolutely against chickens).  But I went out to help feed them...And fell in love!  Really.  It only took one day for me to decide I liked chickens!
Of course they have names!  Snowneck, Cutie-Pie, Mouse, Mr. Cheeseball (we thought Cheesie was a boy at first!), Sleeve-Eater and Bluestar.  Yikes came later and became queen and Old Lady of the flock.
Chickens are like potato can't have just one.

I love my Eglu

Today the Eglu needed cleaning.  As you may know if you raise any creature, housing can be very unpleasant to clean out!  Fortunately, the Eglu was designed for chickens.  The floor is smooth, the tray is very smooth and the nest has a hole in the bottom for when you need to wash it!
I love Omlet, they're a great company!  Here's their website if you want to see all of their fashionable (and a bit strange) coops.  You might want to look, the Eglu Cube is quite...impressive.
Cleaning the Henspa tends to be harder.  But that could be because we stuffed it with straw to keep the hens warm last winter!  We are older and wiser now.

It's raining!

It's true!  Buckets of water are pouring out of the sky!  I'm so happy!  We really needed some rain.  This is what, the second rain we've gotten since we moved?  Anyway, the puddles are almost one inch deep in some places.
QuackStar would have loved this.
The "city slickers" who have grown up here will be horrified by all this water(no offense intended, city people)!  I hope Lady Sandstorm is a wimp because I'm not sure if Egglantine can take this much dampness yet.  The garden will like it though!

Headers, claws and candy flowers!

Okay, what do you think of the new header?  I like it!  Lord Firestar is so photogenic!  Life is good when you have a good image editing program and some nice chickens to photograph.

I trimmed the Lord and Lady's toenails today because they were getting a little long.  Lord Firestar tolerated it.  Lady Sandstorm HATED it.  Chipmunk annoyed me by flying onto my arms a lot.  They are all very silly.
Lately the kids have been eating lots of small white flowers.  They love them!  I just hope the flowers aren't poisonous.

Today was the rabbit project meeting!  We visited a breeder and saw some very pretty rabbits:  Fuzzy Lops, Jersey Woolies, Thriantas and Netherland Dwarves.

Thriantas are almost orange!  A very pretty rabbit breed, they were accepted by ARBA fairly recently.

Fuzzy Lops are funny looking and cute.  Although I prefer rabbit-eared rabbits, the lop breeds are pretty amusing!

Now THIS is cute overload!

One of the 4-Hers brought her Fuzzy Lop to be bred.  Unfortunately, the doe wouldn't cooperate!  So I took a few pictures.

I really like 4-H!

Head, Heart, Hands, Health

Do you recognize those words?  That's right, it's the four H's of 4-H!  We went to the poultry meeting today which was fun.  We had to identify parts of a chicken and make feather decorations!
4-H is pretty fun!  So far I am really enjoying it!  Oh, and we got to educate everyone on Eglus.

Just a quick post.

In case you want to know the pledge:

"I pledge
My head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service, and
My health to better living,
For my club, my community, my country, and my world."

My friends!

Not my human friends though.  This IS the evil internet after all!  But here are some of my best friends.... including a few you've never met!

Puff-Puff (better known as Puff) was a great hunter. She liked showing off all the mice she caught! We always praised her and told her how clever she was. Such a sweet cat! Puff loved people.

Silly was my hamster. He/she was a nice pet as long as you didn't disturb him/her during the day! One of my former human friends made this mistake! Nobody ever did that again as long as Silly lived!

Sweet, gentle Snowneck was a vicious beast as a pullet. She often pecked at us or bit us. Fortunately she quickly grew out of that and became a wonderful friend.

Kooshie is a great hunting hawk. She isn't actually a hawk but she flies up like one! A very silly and sweet bird.

Lord Firestar

Perhaps the nicest rooster ever hatched, Lord Firestar is a good friend.  He tolerates a lot of hugging!  Occasionally he helps me with my blog posts!

Remember Quackie? He flew away a while ago but we still think about him a lot. He was a very funny duck, especially when he waddled around our house, feet thwacking on the floor!

Chipmunk is my newest best friend! She is very funny and cute.  She is a co-author of Mookie and Kooshie.

So there are a few of my best friends!  Of course, I like all of my animals, not just these ones.

Tressie died from eggbinding yesterday. We'll miss her. She may have been a little odd in the head but we loved her so much. Poor Trespassers, she was so beautiful and tragic looking with her big, sad eyes.

Family togetherness

Today we had all the Seramas outside together! Lord Firestar was actually pretty nice to his big family which was a pleasant surprise! Lady Sandstorm chased the kids away when they came too near but mostly she left them alone. Here is proof that they really tolerated each other:

Hanging out together.

Lord Firestar guards his flock.

Lady Sandstorm picks at her toenail....I think that's what she's doing!

Giddyup, mommy!

I never knew that chicks sometimes ride on their moms! Egglantine did, anyway. Lady Sandstorm tolerated it for a bit and then stood very straight so that Eggie fell off. Chickens are so much fun.
