Broody pictures and a movie

Want to see a silly Mommybird? Then you have come to the right place! Here is a movie and a picture of her being crazy. I would add more but I think that a video and a photo is plenty for one blog post.
Broodies are so much fun! And it will be even more fun if she hatches that egg! Poor Lady Sandstorm.

News, news and more news!

Yes, Plain Old Chickens has returned to its original template! Can you believe it? I was just gazing at it when I realized I don't want a brown blog! Now it looks a lot nicer (in my not-so-humble opinion).

The other news is that Lady Sandstorm is broody. She isn't the best broody ever ("I'll just go have a snack break now") but she is sitting on an egg and it might hatch. The strange thing is that she is the only hen I know who becomes more friendly when she gets broody! Every time I'm outside and she's off the nest, Lady Sandstorm comes over and flies onto my lap. She seems to enjoy pecking and scratching my clothes. Very silly.

ChickenTales episode 1

Thursday, August 27, 2009

Yesterday we went to an amusement park. It was fun to go on the Ferris Wheel and the carousel. We stayed until it was rather late.
When we got home, we found that Lady Sandstorm had laid two eggs! Poor thing, no wonder she was acting broody! One was small and shelless but the other was fine. We thanked her and felt sorry for her, no hen enjoys laying multiple eggs a day.
The babies just keep growing and growing. They are looking very feathery now and in a couple of weeks they will be looking like teenagers. For now at least, they are still cute little fuzzies.

Krita is wonderful. You can do anything with an image once you have krita! I (finally) figured out how to combine several pictures, a very useful thing to know.
Here are some of my brilliant masterpieces. In the Lord Firestar one, you can tell that he was glued in (that was a figure of speech). The Turtle one is what happens when you put a few chicken pictures together! They almost look natural!

Lord Firestar's tail will be growing back soon. There are several pinfeathers coming in. I can hardly wait to see him looking noble and grand again!
Lady Sandstorm looks the same. A little bit bald and ragged but certainly not ugly. Her tail is actually taller than his now! Rather sad but very true.

Wings and tails

Chick news:
The chicks are looking great. Their shoulder feathers are coming in now and their wings are lovely. It looks like we won't have any (boring) solid colored birds! They all have nice patterns on their feathers. Obviously they were all misnamed (except Help, of course!).

Lord Firestar news:
Lord Firestar, the most beautiful rooster ever, has lost his tail! Now he only has a pathetic stump. Hopefully it will grow back soon. He looks ridiculous!
Despite molting, he is still sweet and friendly. I love Seramas!

The county fair (part 2)

Some more photos from the fair!

The county fair

The local county fair was very fun... once we found the poultry! Lots of chickens were in their cages, some complaining, some curious, all of them a bit surprised! Here are a few of the chickens we saw.

How many of you have been glared at by a Silkie? I was, as you can see. He/she (difficult to tell with Silkies, and I can't remember what the card said) was very stylish.
The Polish were just as beautiful and silly as I had expected. This hen was my favorite~curious and intelligent.
Those Runner ducks are so silly! You should have seen them.

Cute little tails!

The chicks' tail feathers already stand up proudly! Somehow I don't think any of them will be the colors we named them. Black does not look black and Yellow is certainly not yellow! They are very silly and cute so we don't mind.
Aren't they adorable? Everyone loves them. Don't you?
Left to right:
Gold, Yellow, Help.
In case you didn't know, the chicks look red because they are under a heat lamp. You probably knew that.

A movie of Lord Firestar

This is just a cute movie. Lord Firestar being cute. He is so sweet! Everyone loves him.

They're bigger now

Not a lot bigger but a little bit. Some of them have tiny wing feathers (very different from QuackStar) and they spend time pecking everything. All pretty healthy so far. So cute!

Lady Sandstorm is acting like a broody. She walks around clucking and spreading her wings. When Lord Firestar dances around her, she turns into a wall! Her head goes down, her tail goes up, her wings go out; it is funny. Lord Firestar still gives her food before he eats any himself. He loves her.

6 of 6

All six chicks hatched! The only one who needed help was (you guessed it) Help. Yes, the chicks have names:
  1. Black (black)
  2. Yellow (possibly Lady Sandstorm color)
  3. Chipmunk (striped)
  4. Help (Lady S. color)
  5. Knight (black)
  6. Gold (Lady S. color)
So there you go. Six fuzzy Seramas. I hope they're all hens.

Poor babies! They're all tired out.

There are three chicks now. The first is blackish, the second is yellowish (maybe the same color as Lady Sandstorm), the third is chipmunk-striped. They are now very cute but still quite clumsy. Two of the other eggs pipped but there is no sign of progress.
Three of six hatched~it was a success!

Kind of an ugly chick just now but he'll get cuter when he dries out. He/she has a few striking features:
  • His wings are big.
  • His feet are almost as thick as a normal chick's but shorter.
  • His eyes are massive!
Oh, and there's something stuck to or sticking out of his bottom. Looks like the "shell" of a shelless egg. Other than that, he's pretty cute!

Eggs are pipping!

Three of the six eggs are pipping now! The others show no signs of life yet. If three of six eggs hatch, I'll be very happy! I think I have exclamation point disease!!! Oooh, I am sooo excited! We obviously didn't do everything wrong!

Panicky with excitement!

The eggs are now on day nineteen! Maybe we're imagining things but we think one of the eggs is wiggling! It is the dirtiest but also the second newest. With a bit of luck, we might have a (small) brooderfull of chicks tomorrow or the day after! Excitement is mounting high here!

Yes, he's gone.

It has been three days since we last saw QuackStar. Not a sign of him since. I guess we'll have to hope he has made it to some sort of duckie paradise because it is very unlikely that we will ever see him again. Little did we know that he had planned to leave precisely two months after we first met him!
You might have guessed that I am pretty sad about this. Yes, it is the saddest thing since Cheeseball's death. And Cheeseball's death was the saddest thing since Mouse's death! That proves that we miss QuackStar.
I hope he's okay.
