(Not So Little) QuackStar

Here's QuackStar one month ago.....And here he is now (guess which picture is newer)! Can you believe how much he's grown? Amazing! We think he is a drake, I spotted some greenish feathers under his head down.

"Cock-A-Doodle-Doo!" (Again)

Lord Firestar is cute but he loves to YELL! He's probably saying something like "I've got something to say!" or "I am totally great!" I don't recommend having a rooster in the city (even if you keep him in the house).

QuackStar is as big as Lady Sandstorm now. He looks a little silly because of the pinfeathers but we like him anyway. He has been banned from the house ever since he did an extra sloppy poop on the carpet yesterday.

Too bad

We have a camping trip scheduled for the week when the chicks would hatch so we have to wait. Please stop holding your breath, the Serama chicks won't be hatching for a long time.
Here is an "ancient" photo of QuackStar, Lady Sandstorm and Lord Firestar. Serama chickens always look great!

Daydreams of chicks

It seems a little silly to run an incubator for two eggs but that's what the plan is! I should be setting the eggs tomorrow and then it's three weeks until we find out if we get any chicks! Three whole weeks....that is a really long time. Probably they won't hatch. Two eggs, seventy percent fertile and the remaining egg is probably too old. Cross your fingers for a good hatch!

Here is the Eglu!

Please admire it. The Eglu looks small in the picture but trust me, it's big and heavy. I could keep four Seramas in there. The "eggport" would be the easiest place for a raccoon to break in but it would have to be a pretty clever raccoon.

I wonder how the Big Girls are doing...

Just a few nice pictures. Enjoy!

Spoiled chickens lay better eggs...

...So now the Seramas have an Eglu! We had to pick it up at a Greyhound bus station and it nearly didn't fit in our little truck. We got home pretty late but it is now mostly assembled (except for a few parts of the run). Lord Firestar chose pink (amazing, that was the one I wanted!) so here it is, hot pink!
Since I don't have any pictures of it yet, here is a link to the Omlet website.

"You're getting spit in my hair!"

6kkkkkLady Sandstorm loves hair. I don't know why but it fills her with happiness. When she sees hair she wants to eat it!hinipppppp--------She likes typing, too. The strange words are her invention. A very clever hen, but not as clever
as the piano-playing chicken I found on the web somewhere.

Twitterduck has pinfeathers!

Yes, QuackStar is finally getting pinfeathers! We gave him some water to swim in and I could see the little feathers coming in! Ducks are so much fun. "Twitterduck?" You ask. We call him that for two reasons, A: Because he twitters; and B: Because he is always giving us a running commentary on everything, interesting or pointless.

Poor little chickens (and duck)

Top: Lord Firestar's beautiful feathers.
Bottom: A not-very-up-to-date photo of QuackStar.
We were driving yesterday and the day before so I couldn't write at all. The poor Seramas were okay (except when Lady Sandstorm decided that a good way to amuse herself was to eat her dear husband's face off). And QuackStar was fine even though he kept dumping out his water. When I finally got on the computer last night, it was so late that all I had time to do was moderate a comment! I'll get those pictures off the camera as soon as possible!

QuackStar is huge!

He looks like a gosling! The cute feather pattern is still there and his wings are still little but the rest of him is massive! After we move (again) I will post a few pictures. He's fat!

I should have posted this picture ages ago!

This picture is for Cheeseball. We miss her. She was very sweet.

"Quick, hide!"

The Seramas love being outside! They like to stay under one of the bushes where they can hide from everyone (including me!). There are two bushes in the yard, one is a little shrub and the other is a giant palace. Of course they prefer the palace where they can hide!
They can't wander unless I'm watching them so the Seramas stay in a cage most of the time while they're outside. Lady Sandstorm thinks grass is edible happiness. Lord Firestar thinks his wife is beautiful. They are sweet.

Worried Seramas and speedy ducks!

Lord Firestar and Lady Sandstorm react very differently when they see a hawk. Lord Firestar gets smaller and makes funny noises but Lady Sandstorm stands up extra tall and says "Buk-buk-buk". They are both very silly.

QuackStar is really, really fast. We let him outside today and he ran! It was ridiculous how fast he was~he could probably outrun Lord Firestar and Lady Sandstorm. We barely caught him! Crazy duckling.
He seems to have bonded with us. If he's in the brooder, he's unhappy so we carry him around with us a lot.

Feed is amazing!

We always give our birds the best feed available. For a long time that was organic laying feed. After we moved, we switched to whole-grain homemade organic feed supplemented with grit and oyster shell.
But what do you feed a duckling? QuackStar refused to eat the ground grown-up feed mixed with water (it was safe to give him/her some because it has no calcium) and dry was just as bad. We visited the wonderful farm supply store and asked for duckling feed. They did not have any but they had Flock Raiser which is suitable for turkeys, geese and ducks. We bought a chick feeder and two pounds of Flock Raiser for less than four dollars! QuackStar loved it! He (I will call QuackStar a he from now on) is now eating and making up for lost time.

Serama news
Lady Sandstorm has learned how to escape from the Serama cage. She lays eggs fairly often. Lord Firestar is being good, he stays in the cage and worries about his very silly wife. He dances around her. They love being outside together.
