A proud day for Plain Old Chickens!

My dad finally set up Wordpress for me!  You can see my new blog here.  If you have any ideas on how to make it look nicer, please comment here!

In case you were worrying, I have no intention of abandoning this blog.

Whew!

Christmas is finally over!  No, it actually wasn't too horrible.  We spent way too much time in the car though!  I got some gift cards and a camcorder!  Yay!  The chickens, sadly, didn't get anything except two nights in the house because we wanted to keep them safe while we were gone.  I don't think they mind much.

Strangely enough, nobody gave me the Eglu full run cover or the purple butterfly extra small chicken diaper!

I am so lucky!

I was sitting here doing computer stuff when I heard screaming.  I started yelling (more like panicked screeching, really) the moment I was outside.  It left pretty quickly.
I love that Eglu.  All of the Seramas were okay!  It was close though.

My first edited movie!

It took a long time to make it work!  Sure, Cinelerra is nice and has lots of great stuff but I had a lot of problems getting it up on YouTube!  Wrong file type, too big, Cinelerra errors.... Finally, here it is.  Enjoy.

Poor, poor Help

No, she isn't dead, just dumb as a doornail!  Help kept preening her wing and forgetting to let go of it before turning her head!  The result?  She'd go running in circles shrieking though a beakful of wing!  Dumb pullet.
I tried to help her by making a coat and.... She ran off screaming like it was trying to kill her!  I admit it, I did laugh a little.

  Ungrateful pullet.

More fun with the poultry project

Today was the poultry project!  We learned about chicken showmanship (slightly different from the rabbit kind!).  It was fun!  I got to hold a Phoenix, a Polish and a Silkie.
  I love 4-H!

200!

So much to write about!  I guess we'll start with that stirring speech I promised you!

First thing on my agenda:

"Way back in 2008, this blog was started to keep our family up to date on our chicken adventures.  We wrote very long, somewhat informative posts about raising chickens, and very long, fairly fun posts about our flock.
  It was fun.
Then I got my very own Google account and it became even more fun!  I read other chicken blogs!  I commented!  Sometimes people commented here!
This blog has been growing by leaps and bounds ever since."

Second subject:

We visited the chickens!  Here are some pictures and updates:

Sleeve-Eater is big and fat although her comb is a bit pale.  She seems pretty happy and healthy.

Cutie-Pie is a little molty but she's okay too.

Juliana has calmed down a bit!  She isn't flighty any more!

Yikes is an evil old lady.  She's been tearing out Snowneck's pinfeathers!  Poor Snowneck is in full molt with almost half her feathers missing!  I'd show you the picture but it might hurt her feelings.

Mookie is very mad at me.  She was constantly pecking.

Kooshie's beard has finally grown back!  So cute!  Unfortunately, she has bumblefoot and we didn't have enough time to fix it.

Subject 3.

The Seramas are fine.  We got home today and found them all alive and well.  Yay!

Mostly good news!

Oh my.

What do you think?  I think it's proof that krita is just as useful as GIMP!

200 posts is coming up!

I guess I've written a lot this year!  As usual, I'll put up an award or two (I like making awards!) and I'll write a celebratory speech.  I'm not really sure what the speech will be about yet.  200 is just a few posts away!

Pictures, weight and silliness!

Have you noticed that I love chicken photography?  Here are some of my latest photos!

Lord Firestar, regal king of the universe!

Help, the plump but dainty princess.

Try to guess what Chipmunk was doing!

Oh, and Egglantine is 4.8 ounces.  That makes her a bit small for her age.

Bath time!

A QuackStar bath time movie!

No new pictures available and not much to write about here!  Hopefully you have flash installed!  It's a cute little movie.

After all these months I found....

New flock photos

I haven't uploaded pictures for a long time!  Here are some new ones from yesterday and today.

Lady Sandstorm and Egglantine dust bathe.

Chipmunk walks.  She's so cute!

Help.  She's pretty!

Egglantine.

Try to figure out what's going on in this odd photo!

Silly Chipmunk!

And, last but certainly not least, Lord Firestar.

Thanksgiving!

I'm thankful for Lord Firestar, Lady Sandstorm, the three Musketeers and Egglantine!  And QuackStar, we miss him a lot!  Oh, and the oldest flock, and the younger flock.  So I'm thankful for:
  1. Yikes
  2. Cutie-Pie
  3. Snowneck
  4. Sleeve-Eater
  5. Cheeseball
  6. Mouse
  7. Bluestar
  8. Mookie
  9. Kooshie
  10. Trespassers
  11. Turtle
  12. Juliana
  13. Lord Firestar
  14. Lady Sandstorm
  15. QuackStar
  16. Black
  17. Yellow
  18. Chipmunk
  19. Help
  20. Knight
  21. Gold
  22. Egglantine
Oh, and my friends and family, of course.  And I'm thankful that the chickens have good houses to live in, good feed to eat, good people taking care of them and clean water to drink.
There's a lot to be thankful for!

Backyard Poultry

Today I got an issue of Backyard Poultry in the mail!  As usual, I had a good time reading it!
Not to be confused with Backyard Chickens, Backyard Poultry is an excellent magazine for crazy chicken people!  There's lots of useful advice, a breeders directory and a fun section especially for kids (although I have a feeling that quite a few adults like Gertrude McCluck mysteries too).   Between Backyard Poultry and Backyard Chickens, you hardly need anything else!

Not much else to write about.

Beautiful Lord Firestar

Lord Firestar is so cute!  He and the three musketeers (formerly The Gang) like to go exploring together.  He watches over them with a worried look on his face.
At last!  A happy family!  Even Lady Sandstorm is starting to tolerate everybody.

Like the new template?  I think I'll need to fix the header but it looks good!  Very calm and stately, just like Snowneck!

Thirty followers!

I never imagined I'd have to make another award so soon!  You guys are keeping me busy!  Don't worry, I really enjoy making awards.  This one is the first one that says why I made it!

Enjoy looking at it and (as usual) you can put it on your blog if you want.  If you don't want to put it on your blog, I don't mind.

Chipmunk and friends wanted me to post a link to their blog.  The shameless pullets will do anything for publicity!  So here it is:  Mookie and Kooshie and Chipmunk and Yellow and Help's blog

I wonder if we'll ever get eggs again....

I really miss getting eggs.  I don't think we've gotten one since August!  Here's what I want:

Aren't they pretty?

Also, I started trying out png for some of my pictures.  The nice thing is that png supports transparency!  I would use gif except for a small problem:  my favorite image editing program rejects that type of image!  Very annoying.
  Oh, and here's an example:

You can't see it here but that picture is transparent where it looks white.  Cool!

Edited to add:  if you click and drag this picture, you can see the writing underneath!

Poultry project fun!

I just got back from the poultry project.  As usual, it was very fun!  My favorite part was when we made chicken treats!  Here's the recipe:

Chicken treats
You need:
  • Peanut butter
  • A pine cone
  • String
  • Scratch or feed or birdseed
First tie a string around the pine cone.  This will make it easy to hang.  Coat the pine cone with peanut butter.  It doesn't have to be drowned it the stuff, just coated with enough to make it sticky.  Roll the cone in seed.
You might have to put it in your fridge for a bit before giving it to your chickens.  Have fun!

Finally, a wet day!

It rained a bit!  For some queer reason, Lord Firestar was hanging out in the damp Eglu run by himself.  Maybe he thinks he'll be more heroic with wet feathers.  All the girls were staying in the Eglu house, occasionally going out to eat.
They are all getting along pretty well now.  Even evil Lady Sandstorm is being fairly good.  I can hardly believe that little creep became tolerably nice!  I love her.

Here's a picture I just finished doing:

Nothing quite as satisfying as making the perfect picture!

I took a really neat photo today!

Chipmunk in action!  I like this picture.

Chipmunk is a cool pullet!  She likes to eat, play and hang out with the gang!  Oh, and she's cute.

Twenty Followers? Cool!

This is so cool!  I currently have twenty followers!  Take a look at my followers gadget, it's amazing!  I also know of at least one person who subscribes to my blog unofficially.  I guess this means I must have a fairly good blog.
As usual, that means I need to give out a prize.  You don't need to put it on your blog (unless you want to, of course!) but I need to make a prize.  Here it is:

Rabbits...for meat

Rabbits are very cute.  Rabbits are very fuzzy.  But, at dinner tonight, I learned a sad truth: rabbit meat is very tasty!  Have you tried rabbit?  It can be really good!
The point is that we have a good reason to raise rabbits now.  I think we'll be choosing a New Zealand White or similar breed to start with.  This should be an interesting adventure!

BIG Eggie! (Not)

Egglantine weighs 3 ounces.  She's about a month and a half old if I figured that out right.  Not as far behind as I thought.
Yellow is 11 ounces and Help is 12.  I tried to weigh Chipmunk but she left.  Silly Chippie.
I guess Eggie isn't quite as stunted as I thought.

Rabbit project and day 2 outside

Today was the 4-H Rabbit Project meeting.  We learned about Showmanship (I always think it would be funny if girls did showgirlship~there's a funny breed of chicken called a Showgirl!) which was interesting.  I definitely won't be doing it though!  It looks hard!

Egglantine & friends are doing okay despite the fact that Lady Sandstorm is a peckish creep.  They're getting along pretty well in the Eglu now!  I wish we could move so Lord Firestar could join them.
Well that's the news!  Not a lot going on here, is there?

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Big slumber party!

All the girls are sleeping in the Eglu tonight!  If it works, we'll only have Lord Firestar living in the house!  I'm going to check on them now.

Everything looks fine.  Just a big puddle of sleepy Seramas.  Hopefully they'll just decide to live together.

The newest header!

Take a look!  The new header is a special one!  It took way more time to make than the old one.  The first header was just writing.  The second one was a cropped picture set under the writing.  This one took a lot of work and arranging!  I like it.  Just goes to show that sometimes hard work is worth the effort.

Old header:

New header:

In case you forgot her name, the new fashion model/hen is Snowneck.

I was inspired by Olive Tree of HorseFeathers.  She's always improving her blog and it makes me want to improve mine!

Lady Sandstorm

The Lady's tail is growing back beautifully!  It must be the chick starter that's helping her feathers.  Don't worry, I took pictures of her with no tail.
Egglantine isn't doing well, she looks a bit bald!  I'm not sure what the problem is, I'm guessing she's cold or something.  Hopefully she's just going through a major ugly stage!
The gang is doing fine.  Three months old is probably my favorite chicken age.  By three months old, most of their down is gone but they still get scared of the silliest things (such as pieces of mint-green fabric)!
Lord Firestar is falling in love!  "Yay!  He and Lady Sandstorm like each other again!" you think.  Actually, he's falling in love with Chipmunk, his silly daughter!  Chipmunk likes to hang out with Lord Firestar but she leaves when he starts dancing.

Life is very busy around here!

Quackie? Is it you?

I think I saw QuackStar at the Japanese tea garden!  One of the ducks was a big, fat drake who was having fun splashing around.  He just seemed like my little Quackie.  It was good to see him again.

No tail!

Lady Sandstorm lost her tail today!  Poor thing, she looks terrible without it.  Fortunately she has a lot of pinfeathers coming in so soon she will look a lot better.
I'll take some pictures soon.  You have to see her!

Happy beeps

The gang is one cute (and funny!) gang!  Chipmunk likes to fly up on me for no apparent reason other than pooping, Yellow jumps in the air a lot and Help is a very chicken chicken!  Your typical bunch of pullets.  They get scared by everything, including small birds.  They are extra scared of Lord Firestar who sometimes chases them and Lady Sandstorm who chases them quite a lot.  As I have said in previous posts, this is one family with some very tense relationships.
  Not good!

At least they like their house!

Argh! Quit it, Eggie!

Egglantine is cold.  she cries because she's cold.  I hold her and she stops for a moment.  Then she starts up again and Lady Sandstorm gets frantic!  I put her in the cage and she keeps screaming!  Argh!  Looks like we need that heat lamp.
Nasty little spoiled whiney brat.  SHUT YOUR BEAK!  In the future, I think I'll stick with brooders.  Broodies are annoying and they're hard to work around.
Meanwhile, the gang is happily playing outside.  They run about with bits of food and chase each other.  No whining out there!

Excitement

Last night, the girls all got moved!

Lady Sandstorm went into the girls' cage with Egglantine.  I was amazed when Eggie made it onto the higher perch which is 14" off the ground!  Talented Eggie!

The girls slept in the Eglu!  I think they liked it.  Every time the hear something scary, they go hide in the Eglu.  Very cute.

Foot baths

Lord Firestar has dirty feet.  I don't know how he does it but they are caked in poop!  The answer: foot baths and cage cleaning.  I filled an empty sour cream container with warm water and stuck his feet into said container.  Three changes later, his feet were looking better until "cock-a-doodle-doo!" when I had to put him back in his cage.  Next time (after I publish this) I will add a little soap.  THEN I will clean that cage!  How does he mess it up so quickly?
I love him anyway, he is the nicest rooster I've ever met.

Sick of Egglantine?!

Lady Sandstorm wants to get on with her life!  Everything she does seems angry and annoyed.  She growls as she dust bathes and aaarghs when she accidentally leaves Eggie behind.  Not the happy family of the year!
Lord Firestar misses his wife.  He wants to sing and dance, she wants to cluck.  They aren't good friends at the moment.

"The Gang" wants to move outside.  Unfortunately, the unhappy family is keeping them from following their dream!  Every attempt to move the royal mommy and baby into the house has been a failure.
  Poor family.

How I got addicted...to chickens

It just occured to me that most of you don't really know how I first got crazy about chickens!  This post will enlighten you.

Way back in April, 2007, some friends bought fifty meat chicks to raise for a banquet.  The chicks were very cute!  They grew up to become big, fat chickens.  Then butchering day came and all were killed and gutted...except for six pullets who were spared.
The friends went on a trip which left my mom and little sister to take care of them (I was absolutely against chickens).  But I went out to help feed them...And fell in love!  Really.  It only took one day for me to decide I liked chickens!
Of course they have names!  Snowneck, Cutie-Pie, Mouse, Mr. Cheeseball (we thought Cheesie was a boy at first!), Sleeve-Eater and Bluestar.  Yikes came later and became queen and Old Lady of the flock.
Chickens are like potato chips...you can't have just one.
